Allergies

Mickey became milk-protein allergic at 10 weeks old after getting hives where formula touched his lip. He has had an unusual journey as on his 3rd birthday he passed a milk challenge test in the Dr.'s office and happily consumed dairy products for one week and then became allergic again.. which apparently is thought to be medically impossible says the leading food allergy experts in the U.S.

Mickey at age 3 out of the blue became allergic to bananas. Crazy. He has been eating bananas for 3 years and loves them.. then BAM, one day his lips and tongue swell and hives that covered his body for days. It took us a while to figure it out, but after several tests, it became clear that banana was the culprit.

Banana unlike a milk allergy is considered a life-long allergy. We miss the ease of bananas and banana bread, but avoiding banana has not been difficult. Its typically not an ingredient that is hidden in millions of foods...unlike milk protein.

As of Dec 2010, Mickey has completely outgrown his milk-protein allergy. Thank you God! We thank Him over and over for His healing hand! The banana is still a dangerous allergy but easy to avoid--one can easily go into a restaurant and not wonder if the hamburger has banana in it :)

Being allergic to banana puts Mickey at high risk for a Latex Allergy aka Natural Rubber so we limit the types of latex that he comes into contact with. Dipped Latex products have the highest concentration of latex proteins such as medical gloves, balloons and rubber bands-- basically the thin stretchy rubber is what is most dangerous. Thicker rubber that is found in tires and balls is usually heated extensively which lessens the protein content.
